What do I offer?
I offer bespoke packages which include home-ed learning, one-to-one and group learning scenarios! I get some regular fantastic feedback – most notably, where neurodiverse children are involved. Working with children who have been diagnosed with ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Dyspraxia, Dyslexia, Dysgraphia and other challenging boundaries to learning, I have a good ability to tailoring material, games, questioning and progression to your child’s needs .
If any of the above reaches out to you, read our FAQ’s below or get in touch now and we’ll see if we can arrange a pre-meet to see if I could be the tutor for you to raise progress, aspirations and attitudes towards Maths!
Key Stage 1 & 2 Maths Classes
-

Key Stage 1
YEARS 1-2
Within Key Stage 1, I have done phonics for years though have not tutored this with schemes that schools may be using. I use letters and sounds! I mainly tutor Maths in KS1 and run two home-ed sessions with these age-related expectations according to the National Curriculum. -

Lower Key Stage 2
YEARS 3-4
Within Lower Key Stage 2 (Year 3/4), I tutor SPAG (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar) and focus on text comprehension in English. I tutor Maths and run a variety of one-to-one and small group scenarios for this group, building on concepts from Key Stage 1. -

Upper Key Stage 2
YEAR 5-6
Within Upper Key Srage 2 (Year 5/6), I do tutor SPAG only within the realms of English. I thrive in teaching Maths concepts, adequately preparing them for Key Stage 3 and bridging any gaps in knowledge from Year 3/4. These are, by far, my most popular classes and bespoke tutoring one-to-one preferences. -

Times Tables
VARIOUS AGES
Times Table classes are taught with zest and different music genres which keep your learners bopping along to sequences of the times tables, whilst learning times table facts - with a smile!
Frequently Asked Questions
General Questions
-
I teach from Key Stage 1 to Key Stage 2
-
My tutoring follows the National Curriculum descriptors as set out. Any changes are monitored and adapted to.
-
I do prepare some students with SATS practise style questions, if this is what is required. I do, however, specially build a rapport with the student to learn to enjoy Maths more and develop confidence. The rest follows when they believe they are capable enough to learn a subject that can be more fun than they previously thought!
-
Maths can be fun and exciting - even on a screen! Bringing key concepts to life with a mixture of annotating of tasks, text-chat-based answering in groups or even the odd task to print and bring with you to the session. These are just a few of the ways Maths can come to life and come out of your screens.
-
Online tutoring is just as effective as a face-to-face tutor. It really depends on many factors - the experience, the qualification and the delivery of the session by the tutor. Bespoke approaches can really make a difference!
Qualifications & Safeguarding
-
I taught for 7 years at an OfSted rated outstanding school, I adapted practise and learnt a lot about teaching and the minds of young learners developing in Early Years. I currently do not have other tutors working with / for me, but I may refer a potential client on if I am full to capacity.
-
I hold an enhanced DBS check.
-
A contract is held between all stakeholders that ensures ear/eye shot contact with your learner. In small group scenarios, I visually register learners prior to beginning to ensure that students are on the account that is named.
-
As a prior teacher and specialist in KS1 Maths who taught at a school that was not in an OfSted inspection for just over 10 years, I was involved in creating specialist programmes for children who struggled with Maths. I co-ordinated Maths in my key stage, taking the lead with Number Day and other mathematical events. I aided planning with Teaching Assistants and currently tutor (8 years and counting) primary-aged Maths.
-
I do. I currently tutor a large amount of students that are home-schooled and have diagnosis for ADHD, autism, dyslexia, dyspraxia and global developmental delay.
Lessons & Teaching Style
-
It depends! I offer half hour, 45 minute sessions or 1 hour depending on your child's needs, attention-spans or financial considerations - groups being cheaper.
-
Classes are usually on a weekly basis. As for how long they will need them, this is entirely up to you. I have tutored a child for 2 months whilst still currently tutoring a student who has been with me since Year 2 and is now about to finish Year 6.
-
Either! I run a small group on a Thursday for Key Stage 2 (Year 5 / Year 6) Maths. I also run many one-to-one scenarios for home-ed students and after-school students.
-
This can be through a chat with you, the adult/carer, first. The first few sessions will act as a great gauge as to where your learner is at and help me to determine next steps and where to go with them on their learning journey with me.
-
Completely optional! You can have a follow up task to the session or you can choose to opt for the session alone. (The private group scenarios do not have this feature as they are at an already discounted rate). The tasks are not compulsory.
Progress & Results
-
Progress is tracked by looking at value added progress in a formative way. Summative assessments can be done, if required, but I tend to do quizzes to check in on their progress rather than 'official testing' as such.
-
This is dependent on so many things - attitude, special need considerations, commitment to any follow up tasks and their presence in the tutoring process. The desire to want to improve and do well, coupled with the enthusiasm that I can bring to a subject area that can cause discomfort is a recipe for success!
Technology & Setup
-
The standard mathematical equipment is usually required to be on hand, just in case it is required for the session. If it's required for a follow up task, this will usually be indicated (e.g. a protractor).
-
The sole platform that I use for lesson delivery is Zoom.
-
Technical issues can be dealt with as per the terms and conditions of the contract. If you cannot reconnect to the session, this will unfortunately use lesson time as it is highly likely I will have other students on a tight schedule. If lessons disconnect, every attempt will be made to regain access / audio as I have experience in the past. E.g. Use another device to sign in, use mobile phones for audio, etc.
“Nick has provided teaching lessons for my daughter for over 5 years. My daughter is now 10. Nick teaches in a variety of essential learning skills in line with national curriculum pathways, relevant to the current year of study. Nick has a good knowledge and understanding of national curriculum requirements at every level of reception and junior school level. He also teaches senior school kids. Additionally, Nick actively communicates with the schools to ensure his teaching sessions dovetail with the pupil. Nick was particularly invaluable during the pandemic, Providing additional on line sessions with my daughter. He continues to provide a great service at a reasonable price. Even when teaching online, he has a range of tools to ensure the child is engaged and is able to concentrate. He is professional and punctual. I would recommend to others who want their children to consolidate their learning.”
